X-017 is staring at his telephone. He picks it up and shakes it.
LATER...
X-017 attempts to dial the phone using a broom from afar (the sweeping end, no less)
Telephone	If you'd like to make a call, please—
X-017 gives up and walks away.

X-017 goes to Shack of Radios and buys a hands free phone. When he gets home, he opens it and tapes it to his side at about eye level, then looks at the box for instructions. The box says, "VOICE ACTIVATED." The regular phone begins to ring, and goes through three rings before the answering machine is heard.
Angela	(to the answering machine) This is Angela. You probably don't remember me, apparently. Y'know, I don't know what I was thinking. It's been over a week and I haven't heard from you. I thought you were different, but you're just like all the other jerks. I hope you call me back so I can hang up on you, asshole.
